Foundation for Ecological Security (FES) was awarded the Times of India Social Impact Awards 2012 in the Environment Category. FES shared this award with another fellow NGO - Dhan Foundation.
The award ceremony, held on 28th January 2013 in New Delhi, was graced by the President of India, along with 15 Union Cabinet Ministers and Ministers with independent charge, leaders of the opposition, top bureaucrats, ambassadors, legal luminaries, business magnates and prominent figures from civil society. The awards were presented to the Chief Functionaries of the winning organisations by the beneficiaries of their work. Sh. Jagdeesh Rao, Executive Director, FES received the award from Smt. Sarjubai Meena, popularly known as the 'Woman with the Turban' from FES project district, Bhilwara, Rajasthan. The award commended FES's efforts on restoring and rejuvenating the degraded commons and forests across seven states of the country.
The TOI Awards focused on five critical spheres: education, healthcare, livelihood, environment and advocacy/empowerment. Widespread and tangible impact, which has the quality of changing lives forever, was the key criterion for these awards. Innovative and self-sustaining measures with the potential of bringing about far-reaching efficiencies were given preference. Applications in various sectors were evaluated for promotion of social justice and equity so that sections that are usually bypassed by conventional development efforts, - such as women, dalits, tribals and minorities, - are kept in focus.
After being recommended by subject experts in Environment - Kartik Shanker, B .M. S. Rathore, Chandra Bhushan, M. D. Madhusudan and visits to the field locations by the TOI journalists, the final selection was made by a Jury comprising eminent personalities like Nandan Nilekani, Anu Aga, Aruna Roy, JM Lyngdoh, Deepak Parekh, Sunita Narain, Naresh Chandra and Syeda Hamid.
